Shakil Ahmed Khan defeated by death this morning (April 7, 2010)
I still remember when I first met Shakil Ahmed Khan in 2008 during PMP seminar organized by JMI Alumni in Dubai.

The man with white beard, sharp eyes, impressive voice & intellectual mind was more than enough to impress any one.
I wasn’t aware that one day I will be working with him.
While working for a consultancy in Abu dhabi, affected by world economic crisis in 2009, I got a call from him to come & meet.
He asked me to provide me of my knowledge of project management to his company Scantec international during weekend.
I agreed & went back to Abu dhabi till I got another call from him to leave everything & join his team urgently.
I pause for a while because there was a huge difference between working in a consultancy & suddenly leave it to join a contractor specialized in a different field!
On his insistence I agreed.
This was the first time when I got an opportunity to face him on daily basis.
I found him younger than me when it comes to energy level & thirst for work.
I used to sit, watch & listen carefully to whatever he used to say as every word came out from his mouth contain knowledge, compassion for work & determination to achieve anything fruitful.
It was the first time I met a person who almost hate the word “impossible”.
The project was a real mess & company has failed miserably on financial ground, but he was determined to take everything back from the jaws of defeat, not because he wants money!
Because he wants to safeguard the financial interest of other people who trusted him.
Suffering from multiple illness, hyper on various issues all of a sudden, saddened by the attitude of people he trusted but faith in ALLAH & his hard work to regain everything back, was the main motive of his hard work at the age of 70+.
He shared many secrets with me & many times his pain came out from his eyes, he try to wipe them out but I can read what actually was there!
I have seen the fighter who has won many battles in his life but struggling right in front of me because of the misuse of his generosity by many.
I remember, he used to say…..
Shakil khan will never run away, he will remain there to work like he used to work before, so that, even if he died then people if not say then to admit that he died while working for others.
I have seen him laughing, shouting, negotiating, counseling & crying.
He was the victim of his own, a person hardly understood but manipulated by many.
He mentioned to me more than once about Jalil bhai, the only person I think he respect too much.
His pain for Jalil bhai was prominent because Jalil bhai was the reason of his entry in UAE & he blames himself for being unlucky for him.
He went up in his career because of him & Jalil bhai came down & lost many things because of him.
He was un doubtfully an authority to his work & well known person in Dubai when it comes to power transmission lines for many years before taking a dip.
Due to high sugar I advice him to bring something light from home to eat as junk food may further spoil his health.
He used to bring apple/pear & a sandwich but he never forgets to offer me one piece of apple & some time half of the sandwich, whether iam there or not on my seat.
It is nothing but shows how much he cares for those he loves.
He was proud of his son & daughter because both have exceeds his expectation & still was there when he needs them.
He has lived his life according to him, most of the time at his terms & conditions, seen many things in life but what he was into is the worse phase.
He said this not because of difficulty level but because of his falling health & uncertainty.
He used to shout & tell many employees that if he is there, they can hope, if he dies then forget everything.
I had no doubt in what he said because we all were fighting a lost battle since dues become enormous & there was no sign of payment from Nakheel as one of the biggest problem.
He was honest in his deal, straight in his words but some time his pause while talking made me realize that he knows the fact but hiding from all so that his team shouldn’t give up.
He was generous in giving & that was his fault as the world has another approach for such kind people.
He was the victim of his generosity, straightforwardness & outspoken nature.
He was very positive approach to achieve results as he always won & wanted to win.
He gifted me two of his books (The inheritance & Ghibah,back biting) & was working on his third book “time management” & wasn’t aware of the truth that he is running of time.
I spend hours & hours listening to him till 18.01.10 before went to Abu Dhabi once again.
I spoke to him on telephone many times since after & emails too.
The last email I sent on 06.04.10 & was expecting a reply early in the morning when I get a call about his demise.
Was saddened by this news as I know the fighter lost the battle this time.
It will be very difficult for me to forget him as he will always remain alive in my heart.

Mumbai: That Supreme Court rejected the plea of a student who sought permission for sporting beard in his school has sent a wave of anger among the Muslims. The All India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat (AIMMM) has expressed its dismay at the observation of the judge.
Maulana Mahmood Daryabadi, general secretary of All Indian Ulama Council, while talking to TwoCircles.net called the decision ‘sorrowful’ and said, ‘The verdict is the result of the judges being influenced by the propaganda of communal elements against Islam. No one has the right to interfere in religious affairs. Muslims are duty bound to grow beard and therefore those not doing so consider themselves to be sinful.’ He asked if there was no objection on namaz (prayers) then why on beard.
Supreme Court judge Markandeya Katju speaking for a bench headed by justice Raveendran on Monday rejected the petition filed by Saleem Ahmad, student of a minority school in Madhya Pradesh and said that SC can not allow Talibanism in the country. He added can SC allow if tomorrow a girl student comes and seeks permission for putting on burqa?
In a statement Mushawarat strongly objected to the use of the world ‘talibanisation’ by the judge. “A Muslim’s request to be allowed to grow beard cannot be equated as “Talibanisation” of the country,” read the statement by Muslim umbrella body.
Markandeya claimed that he is secular to its core but he said that religious beliefs should not be overstretched.
The advocate of Mohammed Saleem, B A Khan had said that the student be allowed to grow beard as it was mandatory upon every Muslim as per their religion.
But Markandeya said that as per the section 30 of Indian Constitution every minority institution is entitled to make laws and run heir institutions accordingly. Every student of the institute must abide by its regulations.
‘The rule of the institution contradicts the Constitution that provides complete freedom to ever citizen to practice his religion. To grow beard is religious obligations upon Muslims. Why there is no objection on Sikhs keeping beard? This should not be an issue rather Muslims should be given complete freedom in a secular country,’ said Haroon Mozawala, general secretary of Khair-e-Ummat Trust.
Dr Zafarul-Islam Khan, President of the AIMMM, said that it is very unfortunate that a Supreme Court judge should nurse such biased and communal ideas and hide behind his claim that he is “a secularist to the core”. Our idea of secularism does not deny religious people their right to abide by their religion in a peaceful way which does not hurt anyone else in any way. Rather, true secularism means that the State will not have an official religion and that it will not interfere in the religious beliefs of its citizens.
The media spokesperson of Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Maharashtra Gulzar Ahmad Azmi said, ‘The decision is utterly wrong. The organizations taking care of Muslim issues especially All India Muslims Personal Law Board should be concerned about it. We should challenge the decision issued by the two-member bench before a three-member of five-member bench of judges because it directly harms our basic rights.’
AIMMM is planning an appeal against the judgment.

The call came at 11pm on a Saturday. Yitzchak Ben moc-ha's mobile flashed up "unidentified number" but he knew who it was. A recorded voice ordered him to report for duty at eight the next morning. As he packed his uniform he wondered if he was heading to prison. The 25-year-old paratrooper was about to tell his commanders that not only would he refuse to join Israel's war in Gaza but would not serve in any capacity that helped perpetuate the conflict.
He reported for duty and was ordered to erect tents for combat soldiers.
"I told my officer, I am not going to do this. The next morning I was sent home. They told me they'd call me again if there was need. They have not called yet. In the past the army used to put refuseniks in jail for weeks. When they were released, sometimes they would be arrested again and this would go on for months.
"But now it seems the army doesn't want to admit publicly there are refuseniks. [It] is embarrassed. It would go against the image of the whole army and country united behind this war."
The Israeli military has told the press there is so much support for the assault on Gaza that more soldiers have turned up to fight than have been called up for what the local media is characterising as a "righteous war". Ben moc-ha says that obscures the increasing number of Israeli men of fighting age, almost all of whom are military reservists, who are refusing to serve the occupation.
One resisters' organisation, Courage to Refuse, published a newspaper advert condemning the killing of hundreds of Palestinian civilians and calling on soldiers to refuse to fight in Gaza. "The brutal, unprecedented violence in Gaza is shocking. The false hope that this kind of violence will bring security to Israelis is all the more dangerous. We cannot stand aside while hundreds of civilians are being butchered by the IDF [Israel Defence Force]," it said.
But it is not clear how many have refused to go to Gaza, because the army is sending people home, quietly. So far, only one reservist has been jailed for refusing to fight. No'em Levna, a first lieutenant in the Israeli army, was sent to a military prison for 14 days. "Killing innocent civilians cannot be justified," he said. "Nothing justifies this kind of killing. It is Israeli arrogance based on logic. It's saying, 'if we hit more, everything will be okay'. But the hatred and anger we are planting in Gaza will rebound on us."
Ben moc-ha is hardly a pacifist or anti-Israeli. He grew up in a Jewish orthodox family, attended a religious school, and served full-time in one of Israel's elite combat parachute units.
He says he joined the Israeli army believing he would be fighting "terror organisations". He found himself suppressing Palestinian aspirations for freedom and putting down protests of Palestinian farmers "against the incontinent theft of their lands". He also saw abuses, such as Israeli troops sending Palestinian women and children into houses to ensure they were not booby-trapped, and using civilians as human shields.
"I am not a pacifist. I recognise the necessity of Israel to have a strong defensive army but I'm no longer going to play a part in 40 years of occupation. I told the army I will report for training so that I can always be ready to defend Israel, but attacking Gaza and perpetuating occupation is not defending Israel."
That is not a popular view in a country where worship of the military begins in school and many political leaders are former generals. But the war is likely to strengthen the resisters once Israelis can reflect on the scale of the killing.
In 2003, the army sent Yoni Ben Artzi to prison for 18 months for declaring himself a conscientious objector. Ben Artzi, the nephew of Binyamin Netanyahu, the former prime minister favoured to return to power in the next general election, was called before a "conscience committee", made up just of military officers. It said he was not a pacifist - on the remarkable grounds that his persistent resistance to the army was evidence of the qualities of a soldier.
He spent longer in jail than any other refusenik, but recently the military has preferred to pretend simply that dissenters don't exist - as hundreds of soldiers and reservists signed petitions refusing to enforce the occupation.
The government was particularly embarrassed when 27 pilots said they would no longer carry out killings of Palestinian leaders in Gaza, and when a group of elite commandos refused to serve in the occupied territories.
Still that remains a minority view. "Some of my comrades from the army don't like what I'm thinking. Some said they don't agree but they support my right to say it. But now, with the war, they say I'm giving my unit a bad reputation," said Ben moc-ha.
He is disturbed that most of the Israeli public and much of the media is blind to the fact that hundreds of Palestinians have been cut to pieces by Israeli fire power. "In the long run, it's not a war of defence. We are creating a thousand suicide bombers for the future from the brothers of the dead, the sons of the dead ... in the long term, we are creating more terror. You can't separate the war in Gaza from the fact that the Palestinian nation is under occupation for more than 40 years. I'm not justifying Hamas firing rockets but we Israelis should first look at what we are doing."
